Learning Japanese

On 19th March 2013, 26 children of Nythe Primary School came to the Mt Fuji Japanese Restaurant within the hotel to experience some Japanese culture and taste Japanese bite sized food.

They wrote their names in Japanese, sang songs, listened to the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar ‘ being read in Japanese and made their own samurai helmet with Japanese newspaper.

They were very excited to taste sushi, deep-fried chicken (terribly popular) and edamame soya beans.

Hope they had good time!

We love having children coming to the Hotel to learn about Japan and try our Japanese food, please contact Kimiko Moyse at the Hotel if you would like to arrange a visit.

The Paris Marathon & Pain

 The Paris Marathon

After completing the Swindon half marathon in October 2012, both Richard and I decided that it would be great fun, a great challenge, a laugh even, to compete in a full marathon. Paris was chosen and the training programme started, many aches, pains, blisters, strains and lots of Vaseline later, I was looking forward to the idea of a relaxing sports massage to help the leg muscles recover, this was not what I got, it was agony.

Although it’s been extremely tough, we are ready (26 days to go), all the long practice runs (up to 24 miles) have been completed and recovered from, only short runs for the next 3 weeks (9 x 4 miles and 3 x 8 miles) still 60 more miles of practice.

Then on Friday the 5th April we head to Paris, no gourmet food, drink or night life for us though, it’s a diet of porridge, pasta, fruit lots of water and sleep.

One hundred nations and more than 40,000 runners will be competing over the 26 miles and 385 yards of the most mythical event that athletics has to offer. The personal challenge of the race also combines with a visit of the city, as the runners hit the streets in the most prestigious of thoroughfares and squares: at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe, the participants take starter’s orders, before heading down the Champs-Elysées, towards Place de la Concorde. The Rue de Rivoli then leads them to the Place de la Bastille and after the greenery of the Bois de Vincennes wood, the difficulty of the return journey is soothed by views of the Notre-Dame Cathedral and then the Eiffel Tower.

Having visited Paris on numerous occasions with my wife and family, there’s nothing like strolling around the Museums, sightseeing, cruising down the Seine, stopping off in a park somewhere to eat delicate pastries all at a decidedly slow gentile pace without any effort exerted.

So this time on my visit to Paris, I will putting my body through this punishment to raise money for a fantastic charity that is so well supported already but needs constant funding to keep going. Please give generously to this worthy cause.

Get Kids Going! helps disabled children take part in sport by providing specialist sports wheelchairs, sports grants and year round support. They can then compete in marathons, triathlons, tennis, athletics, skiing, rugby, basketball etc. With your help, many could become Paralympic champions and world record holders.

2012 Yearbook

2012 Yearbook

2012 has been an extremely busy year at Stanton House Hotel

January and February saw the refurbishment of the Rosemary Restaurant & remodelling of part of the gardens, ready for the arrival of a beautiful English Country House Gazebo.

Country House Gazebo

In March we hosted our Wedding Fayre, this was an outstanding success with over 300 parties attending, the weather was great and all 60 exhibitors thoroughly enjoyed an extremely busy day. When we held our first wedding Fayre in 2003 we decided to organise it ourselves, after all we know how best to show the Hotel and grounds off, we haven’t looked back since and they just keeping getting bigger and better. This year our wedding Fayre will be on the 3rd March and is open to all, come and see the Hotel transformed over to the world of weddings.

April: We opened our new Yakiniku@ Mt Fuji Restaurant, showcasing our new state of the art inside BBQ’s. The idea is simple come and enjoy yourself, eat quality fresh local meat, seafood and vegetables grilled over a direct flame, turning your meal into a fun interactive time spent with friends and family, you decide what you want to eat and then simply grill it.

May & June with the extra bank holiday was a blur of Weddings, Christenings & Parties; our busiest 2 months ever with over 20 weddings, a party on the front lawn for the village of Stanton Fitzwarren to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee

July & August: Although not the greatest of summers, we still had great displays in our gardens, the Hotel was extremely busy with Conferences and Accommodation bookings during the week and more weddings at the weekends, topped off with two very busy Restaurants it really was non-stop. The Olympics provided us with a great opportunity to celebrate being British and putting on a bloody good show, both the Olympics and Paralympics were an undoubted success and were the talking point at Meetings, Weddings and Dinner. Our Conservatory was decked out in bunting, had a huge television which constantly had people watching it and the bar did really well every time we won a medal.

September: We launched our new website, showing all that Stanton House Hotel has to offer, a more interactive and user friendly website (you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter), where you can get a more detailed look at everything, we will continually add new & old photographs throughout the year & add as many special offers as possible, we also started our Christmas advertising with a small display in Reception.

October: For some strange reason a few of us decided that it would be a good idea to run the Swindon Half Marathon, well, we all managed to complete it and raised nearly £500.00 for the SANDS charity. Cathy set up the Swindon SANDS group and you can read more about Cathy in an earlier Blog.  That was it then; we have now decided to run the Paris Marathon in April, twice the distance, twice the pain, hopefully double the money raised for charity.

Iain, Cathy, Richard and Yoann

Filipe ran so fast he missed the picture

November: We hosted a workshop for 150 Japanese wedding planners; they were on a 3 day trip to Paris, London & Swindon. We arranged a full mock wedding for them to attend as guests; they witnessed a ceremony, photo shoot and wedding breakfast and in the afternoon took part in classes including Floristry, Photography, Jewellery making, Cake decorating, Stationery & Table displays + much much more.

And then it was December: Enjoy these pictures of our Staff Christmas party, believe me a great time was had by all.

2013 looks just as busy, we hope that you all have a very prosperous 2013 and we look forward to seeing you at Stanton House Hotel throughout the year.

And finally a big thank you to all the staff who make the Hotel what it is “a great place to come too work, everyday”.

Unsung Hero

A BEREAVED mum who set up a group to help other parents in Swindon has been recognised for her work.

Cathy Milburn has been crowned the latest winner of the Swindon Advertisers Unsung Hero award and was presented with a bouquet of flowers from florist George Lesley.

In 2007 Cathy gave birth to a stillborn baby, Adam, and since then she has made it her aim to offer support for families going through the same pain in Swindon.

She set up the group Swindon Stillbirths and Neo-natal Death charity group (SANDS) in 2008 and the group has grown over the years.

Cathy said: “It was really cute that they nominated me and I was really moved by it.

“I helped set up the Swindon group after I lost my son in 2007.

“My husband and I found there wasn’t the support in Swindon for people like us so the group was set up in 2008.

“The whole purpose of the group is to support families and make sure people don’t feel alone.

“We never wanted the group to grow because that meant there were more families going through the same pain as us, but it has and they all appreciate having it there to go to.

“I am delighted to get the award and overwhelmed.”

Cathy was nominated by Gemma Parsons, who lost her child five years ago.

She said: “The reason she deserves the award is for her dedication and support she has given to the charity SANDS.

“If it wasn’t for her there wouldn’t be a support group in Swindon helping families get through the most horrendous experience of losing a child.

“She has also helped with getting a Bath group set up and organises events such as creating memory boxes for the Bath and Swindon hospital to give out to bereaved parents.

“Last year she co-ordinated the Swindon SANDS memorial garden at Kingsdown Crematorium, along with sorting a bereavement suite at the Swindon hospital for parents to deliver their stillborn baby.”

For more information about the group, visit www.swindonsands.org or email admin@swindonsands.org or leave a message on 01793 238788.

Cathy is a wedding Co-ordinator at Stanton House Hotel, in October staff from the Hotel raised funds for SANDS by taking part in the Swindon Half Marathon.
